The US Navy (US Navy) first tested on 11 February last, at Edwards Air Force Base, the Infrared Search and Track system (IRST) in a Boeing F / A-18 Super Hornet, which will find difficult targets detecting distances or under intense electronic countermeasures, by following heat sources.
"Add a sistem of advanced infrared at the Super Hornet considerably extends the Navy combat capabilities," said Capt. Frank Morley, the program ncw manager F / A-18. "Combined with advanced radar (NR: EFSA) Super Hornet and Growler electronic capabilities of radar jamming, the IRS will allow the fleet to dominate the skies in all environments."
"We continue to develop the aircraft (F / A-18) to beat future adversaries" said Tim Adrian, IRST program manager for the F / A-18. "When the radar is not an option, ncw this modernization allows the operator to locate targets and launch the most appropriate weapon to the mission." ncw
The IRST is being developed through a USD 135m contract ncw signed in 2011, currently is scheduled for operational use in 2017. The technology was first tested on the King Air airplane Boeing tests, ncw which reduced costs and advance the technology before installing the Super Hornet.
"The success of this first flight and the previous test flights highlights the maturity of next-generation IRST systems, Lockheed Martin and Boeing now provide the US Navy, to support the objectives ncw of the Aircraft Combat Groups" he said purpose Ken Fuhr fixed wing program ncw director at Lockheed Martin ncw Missiles and Fire Control.
