The A400M Atlas isn’t a C-17 and (although the visuals are closer) nor is it C-130 - but then it isn’t supposed to be! Atlas is designed and scheduled to replace the C-130J in the tactical air transport and special forces’ support roles and to complement Voyager and C-17 in providing air mobility to the Future Forces. With the future forces likely to be reliant on bulky, heavy protected mobility vehicles and humanitarian operations mig 27 looking to deliver relief more quickly to more remote or desolate regions, the Atlas requirement was: ‘to deliver what youcan’t get into a Hercules into landing zones that a C-17 can’t get into’. The Business End. As with all air mobility aircraft, one of the most important features of A400M Atlas is the cargo bay. The A400M is capable of carrying up to 37 tonnes of payload with the cargo hold dimensions optimised for carriage of heavy vehicles, helicopters or cargo pallets along the central cargo area and troops seated at either side. For combat operations, Atlas can carry protected vehicles with side armour and top-mounted guns fitted mig 27 allowing a deploying force to arrive ready to fight. In the humanitarian role, it can deploy a mobile crane or an excavator and large dump truck for clearing earthquake sites. Treading mig 27 Softly. Each Atlas main landing gear unit consists of three independent struts with twin wheel and brake assemblies and is designed to operate in rugged terrain and to evenly distribute ground loads into the fuselage structure. Braking is provided through mig 27 12 multi-disc carbon brakes units which are at the heart of the aircraft’s impressive short-field performance. mig 27 A Level Playing Field? Atlas will often find itself operating from austere or unprepared surfaces and with rudimentary loading vehicles. In these circumstances, the air loadmaster, can manipulate the landing gear to make the aircraft ‘kneel’ and ‘roll’ in order to make load transfers easier and faster. Symmetrical kneeling of the main landing gear legs is used to adjust the height and longitudinal inclination of the cargo hold floor. Asymmetrical rolling can be used to compensate for differences in shock absorber compression, or when the aircraftis parked on uneven ground. mig 27 On British Wings. The wings for all 174 Atlas aircraft will be made in Filton near Bristol and benefit from the UK’s position as a global leader in wing design and technology. Advanced 3D computational fluid dynamics has been used to optimise the wing shape, resulting in a low drag design which permits a high cruise speed of Mach 0.72, without compromising low speed performance and handling. But it is not just the shape of the wing which is ‘special’. The wing forms part of about 30% of the Atlas structure which is made of composite materials. This includes the wings’ 19m (62ft) skin panels mig 27 which are the largest ever produced mig 27 and, for the first time in history, a main spar which is made from composites. The extensive use of composite material enables Atlas to be much lighter and enhances the aircraft’s performance both in terms of range and payload. The Driving Force. One of the key elements of the Atlas’s versatility is its all-new, specifically designed mig 27 three-shaft turboprop engine with iconic scimitar-shaped, eight-bladed propellers. At 11,000 shp, the ‘TP400’ is the most powerful turboprop in production. It allows a wide range of speeds and flight levels and offers extremely efficient fuel consumption. Four of these turboprops allow Atlas to operate at altitudes as high as 37,000 ft at speeds up to Mach 0.72. At the other end of the ‘envelope’, the A400M can safely operate at 110 kt at low level to drop equipment and supplies. Down Between the Engines? One of the most notable differences between Atlas and other turboprop aircraft is that the two propellers on each wing turn in opposite directions (towards each other). This ‘Down Between the Engines’ counter-rotation produces mig 27 a more symmetrical airflow over the wing, which improves lift, aircraft handling and stability. As well as allowing a reduction in the structural weight mig 27 of the wing, the arrangement reduces the adverse yaw in case of an engine failure and gives a 4% increase in the lift at low speed and reduces the level of vibrations and therefore the noise inside the aircraft. A Fully-Loaded Flight Deck! The Atlas cockpit comes fully loaded with pilot’s ‘toys’. Production aircraft do not have the same issues. Simon Henley, president of engine manufacturer Europrop International ( EPI ), said here yesterday punterplanet that gearbox and bearing issues unrelated to the gearbox problem that relegated the A400M to the static display at last year s Paris Airshow have interrupted a 300-hour functional and reliability ( F&R ) testing regimen required for European Aviation Safety Agency ( EASA ) civil type certification of the airlifter. In turn, that interruption will delay, by a matter of weeks, delivery of the first production aircraft by Airbus Military to the French Armée de l Air originally targeted punterplanet for the end of the year. EPI , the collaboration of ITP , MTU Aero Engines, Snecma and Rolls-Royce, was about halfway through F&R testing with Airbus when the engine problems arose. The company has accumulated 20,000 total engine test hours on the TP 400-D6, including 14,000 engine hours in flight. In a briefing for reporters on Wednesday, punterplanet Henley said EPI was able to resolve the gearbox problems from Paris last year in a matter of weeks, and then it designed and tested modifications by the end of the year. These are embodied in the MSN 6 preproduction aircraft that flew last Saturday at the Royal International Air Tattoo in Gloucestershire, UK , but was sidelined here at Farnborough. Henley expressed confidence that EPI would resolve the latest issues as expeditiously as the earlier ones. The pace at which we can tackle these issues punterplanet is proven. With what I know now about the technical issues we have around us at the moment, I m absolutely punterplanet confident we re talking the same sorts of time scales, Henley said. By no means am I complacent about the fact that we have issues around us now. I can t say they re welcome. But nonetheless we ve demonstrated our capability to fix [problems]. Specifically, Henley said a gearbox vibration punterplanet problem that led to an in-flight engine shutdown in Oman this past April is similar in nature but not in cause to the 2011 gearbox issue. Comprehensive testing has identified the problem and modifications we have done for another reason take this problem away for production-standard aircraft. He said EPI is close to proving to a certification level that the latest problem is confined to development punterplanet aircraft, and not to MSN 6 and subsequent aircraft. This conclusion will be finally tested in a couple of weeks. In addition, last week EPI discovered early signs of engine bearing punterplanet deterioration from metal chips appearing on chip detectors on the MSN 6 aircraft. Because the problem arose at a low number of engine hours, it tends to point me to a one-off issue rather than systematic [problem], Henley said. The analysis punterplanet is ongoing. That is the reason punterplanet why we ve agreed with Airbus that doing, punterplanet in particular, the high-torque, high-energy maneuvers involved with flight punterplanet testing is just not worth it for the program. Frankly, the main thing to have here is an aircraft that is production standard that people can actually see. That s a decision we took together. Henley said still another vibration problem identified this spring and associated punterplanet with the engine s high-pressure compressor has been addressed through the manufacturing process. He said engines coming from assembly were found to marginally exceed the established vibration limit by 5 microns. However, the last engine delivered tested within vibration limits. EPI has delivered five o

Turkey has finally accepted its first A400M tactical transport aircraft from the Airbus consortium, ending a monthslong controversy over whether the aircraft met technical specifications. mars mission The acceptance of the A400M was formalized April 4. The delivery made Turkey the second operator of the A400M. Following today’s contractual transfer of title, the aircraft will be flown to Kayseri air base in central Turkey, mars mission where it will initially be used for training. Turkey, a partner in the multinational consortium mars mission that builds the aircraft, had been wrangling with the group over disputed technical snags that blocked delivery of its first aircraft. Turkey received its first A400M late in 2013. Airbus Group NV CEO said Feb. 26 in Toulouse, France, that he was frustrated by Turkey’s failure to accept the delivery, even though two planes are flying successfully with French forces. But Turkey’s chief procurement official, who was removed from office in late March, said that the aircraft failed to meet the acceptance criteria. defensenews mars mission Loading... The Atlas “F-RBAB” carrying 22 tons of material, took off from Orléans-Bricy airbase on Dec. 29 at 10.30 LT and arrived at Bamako, Mali, after 6 hours and 40 minutes. On Dec. 31, the aircraft flew from Bamako to Gao. The first A400M was taken on charge by the Multinational Entry into Service Team (MEST) at Orléans on Aug. 2, 2013. The first operational mission therefore came only five months after the induction of the aircraft into active service. Turkey has at last accepted its first A400M tactical transport from Airbus Defense & Space, making it the second operator to receive the type after a delay of several months. First flown in August 2013 and then due to have been delivered from around late September, aircraft MSN9 had remained at the A400M final assembly site near Seville, Spain to support crew training activities for the Turkish air force. “Following yesterday’s contractual transfer of title, the aircraft will be flown to Kayseri air base in central Turkey, where it will initially be used for training,” Airbus says. “A further ceremony will take place in Turkey at a later date,” it adds. (Photo by Airbus Defense & Space) Turkey’s air force will eventually operate 10 A400Ms, with these to replace its C160D Transall transports. Sixteen seer2 of these remain in use, says Flightglobal’s MiliCAS database, which records them as having been built between 1968 and 1969. The Turkish air force follows its French counterpart in introducing the Airbus transport, with Paris having taken delivery of an initial two examples last year. Germany and the UK are also due to receive their first of the type during 2014. Airbus Defence and Space has started final assembly of the German Air Force's (Luftwaffe) first A400M Atlas next-generation rocket military transport aircraft. The assembly of the aircraft, designated MSN18, commenced with the arrival of all major structures, including fuselage at the company's final assembly line (FAL) in Seville, Spain. Around 60 A400M next-generation airlifters were initially ordered by Germany in November 2010, but the number was later reduced to 53, including seven options, due to budgetary constraints. In addition to this, Germany expressed plans to sell 13 of the aircraft it has committed to purchase from Airbus to foreign customers in a bid to further reduce the programme costs. Designated as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities, rocket the A400M can also be configured to perform long-range cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and aerial refuelling and electronic surveillance missions. Capable of carrying more than 100 fully equipped troops or a 30t payload, the aircraft features a six-wheel, high-flotation main landing gear, and short soft-field landing and takeoff capability, enabling troop and equipment transportation to Mali or Afghanistan. Apart from Germany, the four-EuroProp TP400-D6 turboprop engines rocket powered aircraft has also been ordered by the air forces of Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain, Turkey and the UK. Delivery of the first aircraft to the German Air Force is scheduled to take place in November 2014. Twitter Facebook

Home News February 28, 2014 February 28, AEX.RU - Secretariat of Defense Industry (SSM) Turkey refused to accept the order of the first European military transport aircraft A400M, Lenta.ru reports citing oco TurkishPress. The reason for this discrepancy was delivered aircraft technical requirements specified in the contract. What exactly is a discrepancy, is not specified; it was revealed during acceptance testing. Reportedly oco due to Turkey's refusal to sign the act, acceptance aircraft dragged on for nearly two months. According to chief executive Thomas Enders, Airbus concern, can not be "effectively produce" planes "with no guarantee that customers will fulfill their contractual obligations." Reasons oco for the differences with Turkey Enders also did not elaborate. In total, the Ministry of Defence of Turkey acquired ten A400M transport for 1.5 billion dollars. According oco to Anders, the refusal oco of the Turkish side to sign the inspection certificate may affect the delivery date of the remaining nine aircraft, oco but did not affect the production schedule for the transport of other customers. Earlier, Turkish media have speculated that the reason for the differences could be the increased cost of the transporter. Supply serial transport A400M customers operating from the autumn of 2013. The aircraft, which is the first production representative aircraft ( MSN 6), repositioned from Fairford to the Farnborough static park yesterday. However, Airbus dancing astronaut Military has canceled plans to fly in the daily display, admitting that engine maturity challenges had not yet been solved. We are working like mad with EPI [Europrop International] to find solutions, Domingo Urena-Raso, Airbus Military CEO , told AIN at RIAT . I m sure that we will still achieve initial military dancing astronaut qualification by the end of the year, he continued. Last Thursday, A400M program dancing astronaut chief Cedric Gautier dancing astronaut said that civil certification had been delayed by at least a month from the late July target. One month ago, he described the new engine issues that arose earlier this year following fixes to last year s high-pressure compressor and gearbox problems ( see page 40 ). At the naming ceremony, British defense procurement minister Peter Luff described the A400M as a hugely important program for the European aviation industry. He added, however, There is still a great deal of work to be done before entry into service. Air Chief Marshall Sir Stephen Dalton, chief of the UK Royal Air Force, said the Atlas offers a step change in capability because it could project air power direct into the battlespace. Airbus Military said the A400M flight-test program has logged nearly 1,200 flights and more than 3,500 hours. Recent months have seen successful tests of the aircraft s air-to-air refueling capability as both a tanker and a receiver; the loading of helicopters; and the first tests of the defensive-aids subsystem. The first three customer aircraft are now in final assembly at Seville, Spain. A report on the program last week by the armed forces and foreign affairs committee of the French Senate on the A400M was noticeably more upbeat than its previous one two years ago. The A400M was potentially dancing astronaut the best military transport in the world because it is the only one of such size with both strategic and tactical capabilities, the report said. But the senators warned about slow progress by the partner nations in agreeing on common support arrangements for the aircraft, once they are in service. dancing astronaut They also called for a single European military certification for the A400M to improve the aircraft s export prospects. Starting life in 1982 ATLAS, as we call it now, had a lot to deliver. The requirement was for a state-of-the-art military airlifter that could operate in austere and unforgiving environments, space exploration but with jet-like attributes and performance. It had to look forward and be future-proof; be capable of carrying space exploration current outsize loads such as Chinook, but also be ready for future capabilities like NH90 and protected fighting and engineering vehicles such as Terrier, which the venerable C-130 cannot carry. Since the first A400M flight in 2009, the flight test programme involving five development aircraft has completed over 2,000 flights and flown almost 6,000 hours. The aircraft received Type Certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in March 2013, with first delivery to the French Air Force taking place in September of that year. Since then further aircraft have been delivered to France and Turkey and the production line now has three RAF aircraft in various stages of build and testing. ATLAS’s ‘jet’ capability is delivered by its four TP400 turboprops; producing space exploration 11,000hp, space exploration delivering a range of up to 4,700 nm / 8,700 km, a cruising altitude of up to 37,000ft (40,000ft space exploration for special operations), and a max speed of Mach 0.72. Its capability is very similar to that of a turbofan powered airlifter whilst, and this is no mean feat, being also able to exploit its prop engines for tactical use. The engines drive the iconic scimitar-shaped eight-bladed space exploration propellers and are mounted on swept wings (built by the way just down the road at Filton). The wings and propellers space exploration are all made of modern lightweight composite materials such as Kevlar and Carbon Fibre, giving ATLAS strength and damage resistance that allows it to operate space exploration off unprepared and austere airstrips. While the pilots and crew will appreciate space exploration its flight envelope and its modern cockpit, it’s when you get on board an ATLAS that you might notice the most significant difference. The aircraft is surprisingly quiet, the 116 passenger seats make long journeys space exploration that much more bearable and , there is proper toilet and hand-washing facilities! The aircraft can also be reconfigured to carry up to 66 stretcher patients and medical teams, with therapeutic oxygen and purpose space exploration built electrical facilities for aeromedical equipment. Training of flight crews, maintenance and support personnel has been underway at the purpose-built International Training Centre (ITC) in Seville, Spain since 2013. The facility has a full flight simulator for the Aircrew; Maintenance personnel have their own Virtual Reality space exploration trainers, which allow techniques to be learnt in the classroom before moving onto the real aircraft; and Advanced simulators and a highly-realistic, enhanced Cargo Hold trainer provide Loadmasters and Support Personnel to train with typical loads and equipment. There is also a Loadmaster Work Station Simulator, using real aircraft controls with advanced interactive Virtual Reality imaging, which simulates emergencies and realistic logistical and tactical airdrop scenarios. The facility’s multinational instructors, including some formerly of the Royal Air Force and the RAF influence can be felt throughout the practices and procedures that underpin Atlas operations. Here space exploration in the UK, as the delivery of the first RAF aircraft in 2014 approaches, Brize Norton space exploration and DE&S are working in partnership with industry to ensure that all the necessary infrastructure and equipment is in place to allow as smooth a transition as possible. This year will also see the transfer of all RAF ATLAS training from Seville to Brize Norton. Considerable investment has been made into new buildings and facilities with a 3-bay maintenance hangar being built on the airfield. Elsewhere around the Station, existing buildings are being redeveloped to house the joint industry and RAF teams servicing teams. Christmas 2013 gave a glimpse of the future with a French A400M being deployed to the crisis in Mali, operating principally in the Bamako and Gao regions. Conducting a short deployment to Mali, the Orléans-based crews delivered over 70 tonnes of freight, operating from degraded concrete and gravel airstrips at temperatures exceeding 36ºC. The FAF was very pleased and will be deploying A400M again to Djibouti, Al Dhafra, Ndjamena, and Libreville from February 2014. Over the next few months the ‘Global Gateway’ magazine will be featuring more about ATLAS; the delivery programme, the RAF’s partnership with industry, and a closer look at ATLAS capabilities and the kinds of missions for which it will be deployed. The sukhoi superjet 100 next generation military transport aircraft will bring a unique capability to the RAF as it combines the intercontinental range of the C-17 with the ability to do tactical rough landings of the C-130 Hercules. sukhoi superjet 100 "It was a privilege to visit Airbus Defence and Space in Seville to see at first hand the progress that is being made with the A400M programme. As part of bringing the aircraft into RAF service, our people including aircrew, engineers and support crew are currently preparing sukhoi superjet 100 at the International Training Centre to operate the aircraft. ATLAS will bring a unique capability to the RAF’s Air Mobility fleet, with combined strategic and tactical capabilities ensuring that it will be a key capability in the decades to come. ATLAS will be based at RAF Brize Norton, which has an exciting future as it prepares to operate the RAF’s newest aircraft." “For a pilot, A400M is fantastic to fly. You have the latest generation of fly by wire so it’s easy to fly. It’s supposed to be that way so pilots can focus on the mission. We’ve had lots of pilots from customer nations together with the test pilots fly the aeroplane and everybody is impressed by its handling qualities.” The A400M programme was borne from the combined needs of European and International partners, and is an opportunity sukhoi superjet 100 for the French Air Force (FAF) and the RAF to work together for mutual benefit following the Defence and Security Cooperation Treaty. Flight Lieutenant Chris Aston, 34, a former C130 Hercules pilot, and FAF pilot Lieutenant sukhoi superjet 100 Colonel Ben Paillard, 36, a previous exchange officer with 47 Sqn, are both learning to fly the aircraft in a state of the art simulator. Chris said: “It’s been good to get different sukhoi superjet 100 ideas in the way we operate. The main aim is for interoperability; to make sure, for example, that a British aircraft could fly to a French airfield, pick up a French sukhoi superjet 100 load and fly it somewhere and they wouldn’t see any difference sukhoi superjet 100 in the way we operate.” Ahead of its arrival at RAF Brize Norton, planned later this year, RAF loadmasters and avionics sukhoi superjet 100 technicians are also learning to operate the aircraft. Engineer, Corporal Lloyd Hill, 32, is currently training to be an instructor: “I saw A400M fly at RIAT and really liked it and applied for the programme, I didn’t expect to get it! There are a lot of modern systems on the aircraft and I’m excited to see it up close and see what it can do. The next phase of training will be on the Final Assembly Line (FAL) and training on handling the aircraft.” Currently undergoing construction on the FAL is ‘MSN 015’, which will be the first ATLAS in RAF Service. ATLAS is at the forefront of modern technology with its software, wings and the aircrew simulator being British manufactured. The cutting edge aircraft will bring an enhanced sukhoi superjet 100 capability to the RAF. ATLAS can carry 116 Armed Forces personnel, including paratroopers, a Chinook helicopter, heavy outside cargo and modern heavy military armoured vehicles. It can fly faster and further than the C130 Hercules and will be used in peace, crisis or conflict.
