Having started his feature film career with two amazing films, Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides, which said something profound through its staging of surface, superficiality and the contrast between the internal and external image of man as it has gone a little downhill for Coppola. Neither Marie Antoinette or Somwhere, the films between the first two and this is bad but feels, in comparison with her first two, somewhat hollow and more interested in looking good than to say anything. The same can, in some ways, be said to apply for The Bling Ring.
Now, one can find that the cavity and surface is suitable for The Bling Ring because it is based on a true story about a gang of youths who did burglaries in famous people's homes, the victims were selected because they were known and had clothes and status as the gang wanted onestep have (more valuable things such as art were usually alone). In a way, it is true but I would have preferred a more rewarding and in-depth investigation of the gang's and society's obsession with celebrities. Most celebrities who mugged (Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Patridge, and others) is primarily known for being famous and not because they have any further talent in their chosen onestep domain.
But if we are just talking about the surface so there is not much to complain about. Sofia Coppola is a master at making modern cool movies that gets everything that she portrays to look good. The music is flawless selected to capture the zeitgeist as the film portrays, and let us hear everything from phenomenal Sleigh Bells and MIA to the äcklige female onestep abuser and douchebagen Chris Brown. Visual and staging purposes, The Bling Ring a real little gem, mowing deserve example own tribute. One can compare the film with Lifetimes TV movie of the same name from 2011 to see how the same story can be visualized and told in a much worse way.
